    Weather Striping Garage Door

Opinions Please: My standard side rollers/channel garage door does not seal completely allowing air/dust to enter garage. Is there any product available to seal, but still allow door to function?
    Thanks, Larry

I just found an answer to my question, but will still take other ideas. See URL.

Larry, this is the standard type of seal put on all new doors in my part of the conntry. Keep in mind also, that a properly installed overhead door should close on a constantly closing gap. that is to say that the tracks shouly be closer to the frame at the bottom than the top, so the jamb-up weatherstrip can be put tight against the door for the whole height and it will not stop the door from working properly, because the gap increases the second the door starts to rise. It is similar to the way a gate valve seals so well, you drive a tapered gate into a tapered slot. A door that is properly installed and adjusted should have almost no rattle in it when the wind blows, unfortunately seldom is the door mechanic that takes the time to really get one tight.

At my Home Depo store they sell weatherstripping that fits to the outside of the door frame and the rubber seal, seals against the closed garage door. You can just buy it in lengths and attach it to the door frame.

I used the same Home Depot weatherstripping and bought it as an overhead door kit. The top piece is made different than the jambs to accomidate the upward move of the door, so be careful to read the directions carefully. It made a huge difference in my garage temperature.

Can it be painted? If so, what type of paint?

The weatherstripping I installed is a wood piece approximately(3/8" X 1") with the vinyl weatherstripping routed and shop inserted into the 3/8" edge. The 1" surface sits on the wood door jamb. I nailed it on with galvanized finish nails and painted it.
