    63 SWC Fuelie exhaust manifolds

Recently , here in Farmington, Mi, we had the weather warmed up very quickly from below freezing to 55/58 degrees F in one day.
    Huminity was also very high.
When I went to work on my car, I could not believe what I saw...(stored in an unheated garage)
The car was wet all over, water droplets formed on all steel parts, engine, aluminum F.I system, even the fiber glass in the engine bay was covered with water droplets. I have never seen anything like that.
I did wipe off the alum and other accessable areas. The next day a lot of the un-painted parts were rusted. Even some of the alum I could not reach, was oxidized. My exhaust manifolds were rusted so bad, that I removed them from the engine to have them coated.(Was planning on doing that anyway, but not right now)
In the corners of the manifold and at the alternator mounting, the casting was not rusted at all. Why ? Maybe it was coated better than the rest of the casting.
I now have to find the best coating, any suggestions ?
I can now understand, why restored cars, or cars being restored should be in a heated garage, to keep them from deteriorating in a short time. Mine started, and I am not even done...Even some of the underbody brackets, such as muffler mounting brackets, which are new, painted (very lightly), starting to rust.
I will post a few pic's to show the manifolds...
    Whats the best coating ?

Send them to Jerry MacNeish and you'll never have to be concerned with them rusting again, no matter what the humidity or other conditions.

After my car is done and judged, I plan on removing all rusted parts and have them powder coated...

Thanks, Joe. The name rings a bell. I started to go thru copies of previous posts in ref to coating and remember the name.
I'll give them a call on mon...

Re: 63 SWC Fuelie exhaust manifolds

              Rainer,

I had the same thing happen several years ago.

              Some thoughts,

              1. Consider the Car Jacket at www.carbag.com. I put all my cars in one even though Dad's place is heated to 50 degrees all winter. Everything looks new in the spring. They're from Bath, MI so you can either go get one, or it will be at your place in a day.

              2. If not the car jacket, at LEAST put plastic under the car to act as a vapor barrier. It works amazingly well. I use thick clear plastic in rolls that I buy at the hardware store, the same stuff used as a vapor barrier in walls.

              3. I also have a fan running at ground level in my garage to keep air moving. If the air constantly moves you do not get a large temperature differential under the cars, and that also prevents the phenomenon you noticed (which is commonly called, of course, condensation). I once saw a 3x6 foot puddle under Dad's 92 in the summer when the cement floor was cool and the day warm. Needless to say we have several large fans in the barn now, and that has never happened again.

              4. I had my dehumidifier running in the garage 2 weeks ago when the temperature shifted like that. I knew what was going to happen. Even though I only have my truck and minivan in my garage at present, I didn't want the car parts I've been working on to rust.

You'd be surprised how well some PreLube 6 or similar will wipe the light rust coating off the parts of your car now affected.

                AGREED!

                I had mine done there.

They look great and no rust.

Re: 63 SWC Fuelie exhaust manifolds

When a cold dry front follows a moist warm front, it's possible to get condensation in an unheateed uninsulated garge.

One thing you can do is run a dehumidifier in the garage when it gets warm.

A film of Armor-All will also prevent condensation corrosion on uncoated parts like exhaust manifolds and bare aluminum, and Armor-All will take the exhaust manifold heat.

Thanks everyone for such good advise. Will coat everything now rusted and what has just started with Armor All, till I can get all the other long range things ordered and applied.
But the manifolds will be send out mon...
Hope I get everything reinstalled and finish all small other things by may for the car to be judged here in Michigan...
