59 Hood Release Handle Problem

I'm having a problem with the original hood release handle. The problem is that the handle/rod rotates were the 2 cables attach at the bottom end of the rod. It looks like this assembly cannot be taken apart to determine why the rod rotates. Is there someone that can fixes these or is there a way that I can fix this myself?

George, did it ever work properly since you have had it? Is the rod round or is it "D" shaped (round with a flat area running the length of the rod)?

The originals have a plastic insert with a "V" that meets the shaft which has a groove in the bottom. That will keep the handle from turning. You could have an original that is broken and will turn or you could have a repro that has no "V" insert and no groove in the bottom of the shaft which will turn as well. That function will be checked during a PV even though it is not mentioned in the Operations manual. I bought an original from Mary Jo. As it turns out she rebuilds them (or trys to). One pull and it was toast. She made me eat it because it was past her 30 day guarantee period.

It is an original that is broken. The rod is D shaped. Is it possible to get the "V" part and replace the broke one? I don't have the part in front of me. I'll take a closer look at it tonight if my wife let's me go out to the garage . Do you have any pictures that might help?

The rod is D shaped where the handle presses on only. If it is an original hood release the round rod has a very distinct groove on the bottom where the plastic V guides it and prevents the rotating of it. You should be able to see the small face of the plastic insert as you look at it from the front when installed in the car. If not it is a repro. Those plastic inserts break and cause the turning problem that you refer to. I am not aware of anyone that fixes them.
