    68 shifter unique???

Hi, anyone know if the shifter for 68 is unique in anyway. Just wondering. I seem to recall that it is short compared to 69 and later?? Terry

          Terry-----

You heard wrong. The 1968 and 1969 shifters are the same except for the shifter knob. Since the shifter assemblies were supplied, for both PRODUCTION and SERVICE, complete with the shifter knob, the part numbers were different for the 1968 and 1969 shifter assemblies. However, the difference in the part numbers was on;ly a result of the difference in the knobs. Later, the 1969-76 shifter became SERVICE for 1968, too. In that case, you were forced to "suffer" with a black knob if you had a 1968 (or, you could swap out your original chrome knob for the black one or purchase a chrome knob separately).

As a side note, the 69-76 shifter, GM #3960609, did change slightly in later SERVICE. What happened was the black chrome shifter knob, GM #3960608, was replaced by a black plastic knob of GM #371753. I don't know if this knob was ever used on PRODUCTION shifters, or not.
