Re: 65 frames ......

Early 1965 frames (prior to the time that the L-78 was introduced) may lack the relief in the front crossmember for big block balancer clearance. However, most 1965 frames, big block or small block, have the relief.
Some L65-67 small block frames MAY lack the holes and weld nuts for the rear stabilizer shaft "U" brackets. I think that most, if not all, L65-67 frames have the holes and weld nuts, though. From 1968 on, some small block frames did not have the holes and weld nuts.
As far as I know, the inserts were used for battery tray retention bolts in the frame for all applications. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Re: bolt holes
the car was built on july 13 it has the dip in the x member and the captive nuts for the rear sway bar .... but it also has nut inserts in for battery trays on both rt and lft rails so is this normal ??? or should it only have inserts in one of the two rails???and not both...- Top

Re: bolt holes

The inserts were installed by the frame manufacturer, A.O. Smith. They would not have known whether any particular frame was destined for a big block or small block. So, they undoubtedly installed the inserts for both battery mounting possibilities. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Factory inserts on RH side only
and for 396 or air-conditioned cars, should show no evidence of ever having a bolt threaded in.
The LH battery tray on C60 cars and L78 cars were drilled and self-threading bolts were installed, on a per-application basis -- no inserts.- Top
