    65 frames ......

i have been told that there are differences between small and big block frames but cant find anything about what they are .... also how are the holes made for the bolts on a bb battery tray are they inserts like on the right side or are they drilled and tapped ... and on bb frames do they still have the inserts in the frame for the right side tray....thanks don...

    Re: 65 frames ......

    don-----

Early 1965 frames (prior to the time that the L-78 was introduced) may lack the relief in the front crossmember for big block balancer clearance. However, most 1965 frames, big block or small block, have the relief.

Some L65-67 small block frames MAY lack the holes and weld nuts for the rear stabilizer shaft "U" brackets. I think that most, if not all, L65-67 frames have the holes and weld nuts, though. From 1968 on, some small block frames did not have the holes and weld nuts.

As far as I know, the inserts were used for battery tray retention bolts in the frame for all applications.

The inserts were installed by the frame manufacturer, A.O. Smith. They would not have known whether any particular frame was destined for a big block or small block. So, they undoubtedly installed the inserts for both battery mounting possibilities.

so having the inserts in both sides is quite possible or is this an oddity??

Factory inserts on RH side only

and for 396 or air-conditioned cars, should show no evidence of ever having a bolt threaded in.

The LH battery tray on C60 cars and L78 cars were drilled and self-threading bolts were installed, on a per-application basis -- no inserts.

so the rt side inserts should have no threads ???? or threads but no marks arround the edges from the tray or bolts??

hmm ... how in the heck does my frame have inserts in both rails the inserts are different mebey they were installed as a repair for stripped bolts at some time

Donald, my 65 was also built right around the time your was. Whats the last number of your VIN? I have 23060, a small block roadster.

LH's were probably added to correct stripped

.... threads. You have to be very careful when torquing these 6 bolts (only 6 to 8 ft.lbs), as there aren't many engagement threads in the thickness of the frame.
