    Judging and Secret Code Questions

After my second attempt at flight judging I realized a substantial increase in my score over the first time and the car went from 3rd flight to 2nd flight I thought I would be satisfied. However, I pulled the judging sheets out the other night just to (painfully)remind myself about what didn't get full credit. Car scored 93.2 and I'm afraid the Top Flight fever may not have been completely cured.

Lost 12 ops points on headlight warning lights - the parking brake warning light worked, but after checking everything i could prior to the judging, I never could get the headlight warning light to work. - Suggestions about what steps to start trying again ?

Convertible top - lost points for no logo, date and warning label. Is there any way to gain points without installing a brand new Al Knoch top ?

Hood and side emblems - red too "orange and red too "dark". How subjective is this - I can't tell the difference.

Lost all the hubcap and spinner points due to repro and don't EVEN want to go into that again.

Glove box door - NO RIVETS - any reasonably simple way to correct this ?

Jack, jack retainer, etc - Lost 8 originality and 5 condition. Comment was the letters S.R. What is S.R secret code for ?

Rear quarter trim panels - improper install. Any reference book that shows this ?

Ignition Coil . . .lost a few points -"Capacitor missing" Didn't even know there was supposed to be one ! Suggestion other than eBay?

Battery - non original. Trying to justify $270 for the correct Delco repro - but I can gain 40 points here - I'm a little gun shy about spending that much for a repro and not getting all or at least most of the points ( see comment about hub caps ) I know there has been discussion re: this - but if I purchase the correct tar top repro can I expect most of the points ?

Lastly, there were several 1 or 2 point deductions for too much overspray, not enough overspray, too shiny, not shiny enough - well, you get the idea. I've got every reference book and JG - still can't seem to find good pics of what is too little or too much overspray and what is dull and what is shiny on painted items. Is this just looking at a lot of correct cars, taking pictures and trying to emulate same ?

Any and all comments and suggestions gratefully welcomed. I've got until June to figure this out, but the way I procrastinate I'd better start now.

    Thanks in advance

Re: Judging and Secret Code Questions

    Noel,

Some catalogs sell the convertible top label. You can attach it strategically with glue or even have it stitched if you really want to.

Don't worry about the hubcaps - I suspect the next judge will do better. In addition, I think you've learned enough to challenge the next judge.

No reasonably simple way to change the non-rivets unless you're an artist with a Dremel tool and want to try it.

SR = Service Replacement. Likely a nondated later style jack.

There are millions of capacitors on coils in junkyards, or $6.29 at NAPA.

Just get the current Delco battery that is closest in appearance, and you'll get some of the originality points and all of the condition points. Or, find a battery with an all-black case and install a Battery Topper. Some have tricked the judges with this, but I guarantee nothing.

Yes, it's just looking at cars and noting or copying.
Then again, fix your headlight warning lights and don't worry about it because you just gained 12 points.

    Have fun!

      Clarification....

The ignition coil capacitor used on mid-year cars is VERY different from that used on C1 and C3 cars. It's PN 1960958 and has an integral 'leg' on the bottom with a mounting hole for upright installation on the ignition shield support vs. the C1/C3 style coil capacitor that had a discrete mounting band and attached to the coil bracket.

You can walk the scrap yards till you 'drop dead' and NOT find this part on other passenger cars/trucks! It's Corvette specific. The last I looked, original NOS capacitors were still listed in various catalogs like Long Island....

        Noel,
Convertible top should have logo & date impressed into the rear window. The tag is sewn into the bottom left rear window stitching and can be replaced.
Hood & side emblems are available from several sources, from excellent to so-so.
Glove box rivits may be replaced (or even glued in place).
Attend to the major point losses first, than to the next level, etc. You'll get the top flight ribbon.
        Good luck, Kent

          Noel -

The radio noise suppression capacitor on the coil is shown in the AIM in the U69 section, sheet A6, item #5; LICS has it - their #53-03A3.

                Noel,

Do a search for posts by my name. I just went through the the "warning light doesn't work" thing and there were several days of discussion on this board within the past 30 days. Mine turned out to be a bent electrical pin in the fuse box connector at the firewall wiring harness plug. It could be just a bad bulb. I had power to the socket and the light came on if I grounded it at the socket so I knew the problem was beyond that point. I then grounded the circuit before the limiting switches and the light would not come on. I then pulled the plug at the firewall fuse box connection and found the bent pin on the fuse box connection. If the light comes on when grounding before the limiting switches then check the ground after the switches and if that doesn't turn the light on check the switches for continuity. I'd also suggest doing some stretching exercises before attempting this project.

                  Just to add.

My car is a 67. The wiring diagram shows the power source from the headlight switch is a blue wire to the socket and the ground wire from the socket on is grey /black.
