    Air Conditioning Hose Source.....

    Hi -

I just got a call from my local AC shop who informed me he is having a difficult time getting fittings to make a liquid line hose (condensor to VIR assembly) for my 73. He was mumbling something about "special" fittings and "odd" thread sizes yada, yada. I have called several parts and restoration houses to no avail. Can anybody point me in the right direction for this?

Also, several places suggested using a "used" hose. Something about that rubs me the wrong way. Think I would commit harey-karey if I charged the system and that hose leaked given its location, difficulty in changing, and the cost of R12.

    Help!

    Pat,

First, I don't remember if you have a small block or big block. The small block main hose (attaches to compressor, with muffler assembly and two attached hoses), if that's the one you are talking about, is available on The Last Detail's website. Otherwise I heard Old Air Products (Texas?) is working on reproducing some of these older hoses.

      Patrick -

It is a Small Block L-48 Car. I have the compressor/manifold hose already (the one that bolts onto the back of the compressor). What I am looking for is the Liquid Line Hose. This is the one that runs along the PS Inner Fender wall and is connected direct to the condensor outlet on one side and the VIR assembly on the other. Do you have any #'s for these guys? This is the last piece I need before I reassemble the car.... and boy it has been a real quest. But that is a story for another time :-)

      Thanks -

If my memory is working now, this line is steel? It also has the Low presure switch in it along with a metal block that has a sight glass to help in recharging? Thad

            Thad -

I should have prefaced/explained the line a bit more.... There is a metal tube that connects directly to the condensor. This tube comes through the front of the car into the engine compartment. From there it connects to the hose. I have a fellow helping me with this who is a certified commercial HVAC serviceman. He calls the hose a Liquid Line hose and it is standard AC hose with two connections that are crimped in place. Looks just like a standard AC hose to me albeit with "special" fittings according to the AC shop. It runs from the condensor outlet to the back (fender side connx) of the VIR. It is not connected to a sight glass (that's on the other side of the VIR assembly).

I believe the piece you are talking about is connected directly to the evaporator (thin little tube that connects to "engine side" of the VIR as well - this according to my manuals is called the Liquid Bleed Line). That is a non-replaceable item unless you replace the evaporator core as it is soldered right into the core itself. That piece also doesn't connect to the sight glass.

Hope that clarifies what I am looking for. Thanks for helping -

              Thanks Patrick.

The thing that peeves me is I could make all the hoses myself if I had the connectors. I have all the original Weatherhead tooling we used to use in our store to make and crimp AC hoses for customers. Given all of this, maybe I will specialize in doing just that for these blasted Vettes. WHAT A PITA!

Will call these guys today. Thanks again and I will let you know how I make out. I don't suppose anybody out there has a NOS one of these babies.....
