    Ball joint removal tool...

The Chevy chassis manual shows a ball joint removal tool (GM# J-23742) that will remove the ball joints without damagint the rubber boots. Does anyone know where one of these can be obtained?, or made?
    Thanks,

That particular tool may still be available from Kent-Moore. You can call them at 800-345-2233. Give them the tool number and they'll be able to tell you if it's available and how much it costs. Be prepared for a high price, though; Kent-Moore tools are "industrial grade" tools and they usually don't come cheap.

Also, you may be able to obtain a "generic" pressing tool from auto parts or tool supply stores which will function well enough to accomplish what you're after.

With the recommendation from my Corvette Restorer CD, I purchased a lever type ball joint remover. It works amazingly well while protecting the entire ball joint. Cost about $17.00 plus shipping from JC Whitney. It was the only tool I could find to remove the relay rod front the Pitman arm. I tried everything including a pnematic pickle fork. The "Lever Type" puller does not touch the ball joint except for the top of the stem. A great improvement over the pickle fork.

Thanks Kevin. That sounds like a great recommendation and much more affordable than the part from Kent-Moore which was $81.00.

You mentioned a Corvette Restorer CD in your post. Can you tell me a little about it ? Is it an NCRS offering ?

Yes, the NCRS merchandise center in Cincinnati has a product called 'The Complete Restorer' which packs the first 25-years of Restorer Magazine onto CD ROM. You can search on text, Etc, view and print. I've seen the first release and it was VERY clumsy in terms of it's search feature....

You'd search, get a list of say 12 article 'hits', click on one, see the place in the article where that referant was used and then have to start the whole search proceedure over again to look at the next 'hit'. The product has undergone update/revision since first release and there are upgrades available. I don't know how much, if any, improvement has been made in this area since initial release, but Eric Mortimer ought to be able to jump in and tell us.

I CAN say the CD-ROM is worth it's weight in gold IF you use it right.... Don't take everything that's inside for gospel because an article published say 20-years ago may well be obsolete today due to better knowledge on the subject. You can get to the NCRS Store from the top menu of this website!

The CD is still very clumsy, I just bought one a month ago. It has a lot of great stuff in it especially for someone like me new to this "hobby". It is very frustrating to find anything and I usually just read sections for entertainment rather than using it for research, but I'm still glad I bought it.

I think it must have been formatted in COBOL or Fortran and translated to DOS, but they tried to make it look like it was windows based. Where's Bill Gates when you need him?
