    1965 Coupe Glass Replacement

I need a recommendation on a glass shop to supply new windshield, back glass, vent, and side glass for my 1965 coupe. Glass needs LOF logo, AS1 and AS2 designation, date code, etc, to meet NCRS judging guide. Thanks

    Michael,

Don't buy a tinted windshield - you will get a points deduction. Auto City Classic Glass in Isenti, MN is a good and reasonably priced source.

      Re: 1965 Coupe Glass Replacement

I purchased all the glass for my 67 coupe from AUTOCITY Classics Glass in Isanti MN. The logos were perfect. The glass has been thru 3 regionals with NO deducts, except for the windshield tinting line. All the tinted windshields produced are incorrect in the shaded area so you don't have much choice if you need a new one. The deduct was only a couple of points as the judges realize that there isn't a perfect replacement. If you have an original glass that has a reasonable amount of road rash, you may lose more points under condition.....

Thanks, I will call them. My car did not come with soft-ray glass originally, so I will probably not order tinted glass.

Is it recommeded that all the glass have the same date code and how far previous to the build date should the glass be date coded? The build date for my car is March 1965.

Repro tinted side window glass ; any deducts?

          Steve,

Do you think tinted door/side window glass from Autocity Glass would get any deducts? The original driver's side window glass on my '66 coupe has a chip at the top that will take a 1 point deduct. So, I'm thinking of replacing it.

FWIW, my 65 AOS car (trim tag body build date of March 29, final birthday of April 6) has all but the p-side window coded "XJ" (Feb 65) - the anomoly (p-side window) is "UG" (July 64, possibly July 77).

I never have decided if the July dated glass is just an early item in the bin or if it was busted in 1977. I didn't own the car back then.

PS: does repro glass have to have "DOT"? *NM*

My side glass is clear. I can't comment on tinted, but I don't see why a deduct would happen on the side glass. You may need to replace both pieces if there is a shade difference on adjacent windows.

The repo windshield has a dot logo but they placed it in the area that is covered by the gasket.....

Re: PS: does repro glass have to have "DOT"?

All auto glass must have the DOT code assigned to the plant of manufacturing, I believe all glass sold for Corvettes that are legally reproduced using the correct logo are made by Pilkington ( purchased LOF) and are made in the LN Mexacali plant DOT 177, so as stated if you look near the edge you will see dot 177 and then in the LOF shield area you will see DOT 15 the original DOT number of Rossford or some other LOF plant that made the original parts.

I also would like to know what the judges are deducting for, I sure hope it is not color, the blue fades to bronze with UV exposure, but a deep blue is what a non faded original looks like, my guess is that the shade band on originals go straight across and modern repops have a smile or arc or radius that follow the roof line...I suspect that is the issue, we should just ask Pilkington to stop stretching the interlayer and make it like the original.

                    Dino; a follow-up question

                    Dino,

Are you saying that my original '66 side glass will also have a DOT somewhere on it? Or are you saying that all new repro glass will have the DOT?

Originals will only have a DOT 15 in the logo....current repos that are legit that are licensed to put the LOF logo will have a secondary DOT code hidden.

                        Dino -

Roy mentioned at Kissimmee that the tinted windshield standard deductions are being revised to reduce the percentage assigned to reproduction windshields where the shade band is turned down at the ends, as that's the only type that's available.
