Block Paint

I want to repaint the block on my 61,
do I have to take it down to bare metal or
just smooth and clean?

isf its an empty case, i'd have it hot tanked then re-paint it. if its a short block or long block, and i wasn't going to disassemble it and rebuild it, i'd clean it as best i could then repaint. clean with lacquer thinner if its out of the car. clean it with ether(outside) if its still in the car. mike
