    New home for my 62.....

Ok....not total Corvette content(see Corvette in the backround), but here where my 62 is going to live for quite some time doing the full frame off restoration.
I start erecting the 30x33x14H steel building Monday. I chose a industrial grade straight wall building from Safeway Steel. www.powerbiltsteelbuildings.com/workshops.htm
Foundation is heavily reinforced above code, with 28 16" embedded anchor bolts for the columns. Heavy steel columns and beams, insulated walls & ceiling. Using 2 10Wx12H insulated garage doors. Added a bathroom with shower too so I don't track all the dirt into the house after work every night! Planning a 2 post lift too.

Rich, good deal! Enjoy your new shop. FYI - for a 2 post lift 6 inches of concrete is recommended at the post anchors. Gary....

If you are going to put any sawn crack relef lines on the slab make sure they do not come within a foot or more of the lift attaching points.
Good Luck, looks like a nice project.

Real nice Rich. Please explain all the plumbing you have there. i assume by the slab construction you are in a frost free area? Are you going to have A/C? Running water? Drainage? I hope you can show us progress along the way (if the web-master and membership allow it). If not, send it to me if you can...
          Good luck!!!

            Thanks Guys........

Yes it's a bit O/T but this project is mainly due to my 62 project so I consider it very related..... but I won't overdo it here. The 62 is going to take a very long time so I need the space and facilities.

I have 5"-6" of concrete and footers at 18" depth. Bend-Pak specs 5" min. I added extra concrete below the lift post positions. Thanks for the sawcut advice. We're doing that Monday and will be far away from the lift posts. I'll be adding all photos of construction to my 62 Corvette project website and will send some pointers out in the future and not crowd anything here.

Yes I'm in east central Florida so I'm taking full advantage of running water & bathroom drainage is going to my existing septic via a lift station. Bathroom is 6'x6' including a laundry tub sink. Local on demand hot water too. Will have full service 220V electric and A/C will be in before summer. There will also be a sofa bed, tv, stereo, cable tv, fridge, coffee maker, etc. Cathie will have to call for an appointment to get her 63 swc worked on!:-)

              Rich;

Beautiful! Must be nice! I have a single bay (10' wide)x 26' long. When we remodeled our kitchen I had to create a laundry room in the garage for the displaced washer and dryer. I allowed 15'- 7" for the car, plus 6" on each end (just enough to pull it in and close the door)! The remaining 9'-1" is separated from the car by a wall (4") and just fits the appliances with enough room for a folding table and freezer! Talk about negotiations.

              Best of Luck, Keith

                Rich,

The slab looks real nice. But here's a question for your contractor:

You are in Florida, the slab is reinforced, will be covered with the building, and will be heated and cooled. Do you really need to sawcut in contraction joints? Seems like an overkill to me. Maybe a nice coating or sealer will suffice.

                  Hey Rich,
You should post this on the Garage Journal web site, so we can keep up with your build. There are a lot of good ideas over there too.

Having spent some time in the construction business, I can tell you that MOST of thoes lines are control lines that control where the cracking is going to happen. In big open slabs, heated or not, they will occur on 20' - 30' intervals. ya gotta' score lines in fresh concrete or saw cut them in the first few days usually 1/4T (one quarter the thickness of the slab). Handy site to read.

Site is broken down by area - Tools, Photos of your garage and other areas.
There is a lot advice and experence.

I'm so glad I'm doing a Corvette restoration. I'm getting my dream garage! I can't wait to get the garage done so I can get into the 62 full swing.

Just went to that website. Great lead, thank you...

Yes, sawcuts are really needed even in warm climates. The concrete will crack no matter what, and the cuts direct the cracking to the weakest area. One other thing here in my area in FL, any garage must be at least 12" above street grade by code, so you have to bring fill in to raise the land, then have it compacted to spec and tested and verified by construction engineers to get approved. The permit process here is very strict. I even had to have the area sprayed for termite mitigation even though it's concrete floor and a steel bulding!

p.s. I had a little concrete experience with my Contractor brother 3 years ago in the USVI building a little shack for one of his clients.
