    C-3 '69 THM Tanny Codes

Can anyone assist with these codes?

    69L605
    CL-69-2816

I'm not figuring it out based on Bizzoco's 1969 Stringray Guide Book.

    Thanks,

    Don

Well the CL is for a 390hp or 400 hp automatic but you probably knew that.

    My tag reads

    LARGE "C" 69L 388 LARGE "L"

    CL-69- 1730

The large "C",69L and large "L" are silk screened onto the tag and the other numbers are stamped into it.

As far as what the actual numbers mean, I don't know. The numbers I gave are from my original transmission and the car was built late Jan of 69 if that helps.

      Don,

From my reading of the Judging Manual, the 69 indicates the model year, the CL specifies the 427 c.i. engine with hydraulic lifters (390hp or 400hp), and the 605 is a Julian date code where 1 would be January 1, 1968. Given that 1968 was a leap year, your car's transmission was built on the 239th day of 1969, or August 27, 1969. As for the 69-2816 I have no idea what the 4 digit number represents, but I hope someone else can provide the answer.

I don't have all my reference material with me at the judging retreat but the 605 is also a Julian date. Automatic transmission codes are by the model year. Since the 1969 model year production started in August of 1968 they started dating automatic transmissions around then based on 1968 calender year Julian dates. Then when Jan 1, 1969 came around they kept rolling, so that would be 366 or 367 if 1968 was a leap year. So you have to do the math to see where 605 fell, but it would have been late in calendar year 1969. Obviously the 1969 model year Corvette production continuing into December 1969 created some very high Julian numbers.

I believe the 2816 would have been consecutive transmission build number, but I don't know if it was ALL TH400s (unlikely to be that low) or just the number of CL transmissions -- that is more likely.

We haven't spent a lot of time on analyzing the transmission numbers since it is impossible to judge them in normal circumstances.
