    c-2 steering gear

To make a short story as long as possible, I was in the process of removing my steering column and steering gear in anticipation of a body pull. Half way thru I decided I had better take some pictures for reconstruction. I did so and also noticed I had one of the same area from a car that was at the Regional in Flagstaff .

Great ,I now have several picts . The problem ; Mine is a 180 reversal of the Flagstaff car ! Which is correct ? I can say that if mine was reversed at one time it was a very long time ago and worked just fine !

Here is the flagstaff car , and the next post will be of mine .

      Jim------

My belief is that the coupling should be installed in the orientation seen on your car. However, functionally, I don't think it makes any significant difference.

        Jim,

I think yours is right (2nd picture)

        Here's mine on a 67:

Don't think this has been off in the 39 years I've had it.

          Thanks a bunch,

            Thaks Jerry ,

It looks like 67's were a tad different, but still installed the way mine was .

Now you know just one of the reasons I never seem to have a much fun as you,
but I am still trying !

As others have said your rag joint is oriented correctly with the blank studs facing the steering wheel. Additionally there should be plastic sleeves on the studs as shown in the photo

                  Steve ,

That brings up another good question. Your set up is 180 out of the First picture (Flagstaff car} . His rag joint is painted black. Yours is Natural . His steering Gear is natural and yours is black.

                  Comments ? Pehaps 66 and 67s were different . Mine is a 66

I never knew about or have I seen the plastic caps. I must get some of those too !

                  Thanks for the picture .

                      Yes you are !

                      I noticed that too!

Thats why I was afraid that Bubba Had reversed my set up awhike back. However I guess he just changed out that bolt .Assuming you are refering to the right hand side bolt on my rag joint set up.

It takes one to know one,

The rag joint should be natural.
The gearboxes came both ways. I had mine natural, it developed a small rust mark, a drop of sweat I guess, I was docked at a regional meet... so I painted it black to avoid the rust and point deduction......

The plastic caps were originally a hard rubber. I don't think they are available anywhere. Mine were partially worn out. A friend made me these replacements. Thats why you seldom see them.

                              Geez, Rick

Looks a lot better than mine. Don't see the plastic or rubber thing on the stud.

Maybe someday mine will look like yours (but don't hold your breath. )

You have the same grease fitting I have on the clutch shaft, instead of the plug. Looking at the threads on the clutch shaft, I think I need a new clutch (after 16 years).

                              But, it looks very nice
