All I have of these contents is the owners manual. Where would be a good place to look for the rest of the items? I know ebay would be a good source but there must be others as well.
Are many of the items reproduced or do I have to find originals? Almost ZERO chance of me finding the original Protect-o-plate so I hope they are reproduced.
Greg - The key KNOCK OUT is a removable slug in the original GM key head that the KEY NUMBER is stamped on to and is removed by "knocking" or pressing it out of the key head. The Dealer was supposed to remove the KNOCK OUT and give it to the owner to keep. If one had the KEY NUMBER, he/she would be able to go to a locksmith with the KEY NUMBER and have a key cut to the KEY CODE. Most Dealers left the KNOCK OUT in so the owner removed them is the wanted to, but leaving the KNOCK OUT in was a good way to get your car stolen if you went some where with valet parking because all they needed to do was to have a key made and later come by and borrow (without permission) your car. Unfortunately the best place to find the owners manual packed material is the dreaded ebay. I am not sure as to what exactly was in the packet, but I would imagine there is some crossover to other Chevrolet/GM lines. I was able to piece together my 78 Pace Cars packet buy purchasing a Monte Carlo and a Chevette for some of the material. Much cheaper buying a Chevette packet then a Corvette. Start ebay searching the various names of the listed docs. Then substitute Chevelle, Nova etc to see what you find. Eric
I have a list of everything that I should have from the TIM&JG just not sure what is common to other models and what is reproduced and what isn't...or even what most of the items look like!
I guess the key knock-out will be a problem too because I don't have the originals and the way I understand it they are "serialized" to the locks. Does anyone make a reproduction key set?
Dave I guess early s/n, 14xxx with a build date of Jan 31-69. No side exhaust either.
Greg
All the items you need can be purchased the question is if you want to pay the price to pick up the points. The keys and a complete owners packet could cost $1000. If you search for deals you may get out much cheaper.
I think if you contact Joey Jesser you can purchase an nos set of keys complete with the knock out-just need to send him a key for him to cut it to. He did a set for me for my '58-i think each key was approx. $75.00. 330-376-8181.
I would suggest that you contact Pat Krause Pat's Locks. Do a search on this board. He has been recommended by quite a few posters. Also Peter Lindal is a good guy to know when you need locks. If they cannot fix you up, you probably don't need it anyway
Hi Greg. I was able to buy a repo POP on "the popular auction site" and then have it correctly filled out, but it wasn't cheap. The blank plate was about $70, and the embossing was about $200.00. But it looked great, and I didn't lose any points with it at a Regional.
Ironically, last November a former owner of my 70 miraculously found my car's original owners packet, including the original POP. And I gotta say, the repo POP was amazingly similar to the original.
I just wish I would have gotten the original before I spent the money.
This owners packet sure isn't something that I need right now but I thought that I better start educating myself on it before hand. I'm glad that I'll be able to get a quality POP because I thought that that was going to be the hard one.
If I understand the judging and points system I would only lose 1 of the 4 possible points(2 for originality & 2 for condition)for the key knock-outs. I would get 1 point instead of two for originality because of the missing key codes and because that would be more than 10% of originality points I'd be eligible for the 2 condition points which I should get because these are NOS.
I'm just trying to figure out the best way to piece together this owners packet without spending a $1000 on it. Heck, my lacquer paint will be just under a grand!
I have a '68 with no Protect-o-plate. I would love to get one. What information did you need to get the reproduction POP successfully done and what proof, if any, of that infomation did you need to provide ? Did the POP vendor also do the embossing ? Who was it, in each case ? Thanks.
Greg - That's the configuration of the original GM logo head keys for 1969. Keyway letters would be E (ignition/doors) and H (compartment/spare tire). Pete
