Can anyone tell me what the correct finish on a small block timing tab should be? TM/JG suggests that the portion of the tab w/adjustments is unpainted, but that there are "a few original cars that have been found where this detail is omitted." Should the entire tab be unpainted? Thanks in advance.

Don:
I am guessing the tab was on the cover long before the painting.
With that in mind, I cannot imagine any scenario in which the painters hired by GM... would ever bother to be that specific about their painting duties. Even if some instructions could be found (to not paint a section of this assembly) a variation should be allowed for sloppy painting.https://MichiganNCRS.org

Don,
Unpainted.
Or, likely more accurate, painted and wiped off. You can see the numbers have some orange, especially those on the left.
