Can anyone build R89 battery from empty case?

I was wondering if there is any place that could build a R89 battery from an empty original casing? I have heard mixed things about the repro versions that have a battery inside a repro R89 case, so thought I would see if possible to have one built the way the original was made.

I have seen a few cases where a member in search of points has removed the bottom of the case. I'm not sure how they did it but they installed a small battery inside that would start the car. They were proud of their work or no one would have known.

Brad, Contact Jim Kane of Cameron Battery 205 S. Maple St., Emporium, PA 15834

814-496-0921. Jim rebuilds batteries. I have no idea of the cost though. But do know he does a really nice job and numerous NCRS guys have used him. The first to tell me about Jim was my pal Tom Barr-late C4 team leader.

Thanks, it appears the number is 814 486-0921, but I got in touch from the info you provided. He said he could do it for around $200, which is a little cheaper than most of the repro ones anyway (excluding my investment in the case though- so about a wash overall probably). I still need to round up a good lid as it was cracked on this empty R-89 casing that I have.

          Brad,

I had found an original tar top that did not work. I cut the bottom out with a die grinder and slowly removed all the inners. Very time-consuming and messy. I drilled and taped the two posts from the inside and attached standard cables to them. A small but high amp Mazda battery fits nicely inside. This past Regional at Old Town I received full credit with no deductions.
