hi, a freind of mine bought an 86 "pace car edition" only to find that the vin is for a coupe, this car was bought from a dealer in indianapolis who was aware of the change over, can someone tell me what features would be different between a coupe and a convertible, frame, engine etc.thanks

A quick answer = YES they where different in the frame, fiberglass, AC Heater and a few other items.

Many People have cut a convertible rear section and grafted it to a coupe front section.

Look underneath to see if the car has a "X" type brace that runs from one side of the car to the other under the seating area.

This item is not usually there when someone makes a convertible out of a coupe.

In the event the under X-brace is missing, a convertible frame would still have the threaded bolt holes at the four corners--don't recall if there are 2-bolts or 4-bolts used at the 4-corners. The convertible rear tub and rear fender upper deck (convertible flat versus coupe having a little slope to back bumper) are totally different from the coupes. To me, windshield forward could be identical. If you need something more detailed, maybe you could be a little more specific on intentions? Oh, isn't the serial number suppose to be stamped on the top of front left rail? I might have dreamed this point so someone keep me honest!

There are two bolts at each end of the X brace. I don't know for sure if coupe frame has the holes or not, but I do not think so! Tom

If the X brace under the frame was not added during the conversion process, serious structural problems may occur. Personally, I would not drive the car until this brace is installed. Stuctural integrity is compromised when the "B" pillar is removed from the coupe and the X brace makes up for the loss of this component.

"Many People have cut a convertible rear section and grafted it to a coupe front section. "

I can't imagine the horrible cost/benefit ratio of doing this to an '86, given the current values. The thought "more money than brains" comes to mind...
