    1966 Hubcaps

What color is the background on the 66 hubcaps. I know that it is black, but I'm not sure if it is Satin, Flat or gloss and what type of paint. Can I purchase it over the counter or do I need to order it. Thanks for any help.

    1966 Hubcap background paint

    Rich,

From memory I think it is a dark gray with a flat finish.

      Gary,

Mine are, as you say, dark grey and flat. And they still have the ink stamp on the back as well.

I have a 66, mine are a dark grey in color. They also have a rough finish, not smooth to the touch, grainy. The car I have has many unrestored items, the hubcaps beinhg one of them.

            A good recepie

is to visit your local NAPA store and order a can of their 'cast iron' spray paint. Clean the surface of the cap by polishing and/or removing residual original paint BUT measure first so you can re-create an appropriate mask to duplicate the size/location of the original highlight/accent.

Now, visit a professional painter's supply store and buy a can of SEM Self-Etching Primer (about $12). Original caps were stamped SS with flash chrome plate. Ordinary paint is NOT going to adhere well and will be prone to washing off with pressure.....

Lay down your home made accent masks. Shoot a light coat of SEM self-etching primer to get a solid ready to final paint surface. Now, shoot over the primer with the NAPA cast iron spray paint. Let dry, remove masks, hand touch any overspray-mask bleed through. YOU'RE DONE!
