    1968 327 temp sending unit

I am having a tough time coming up with the correct spark plug heat shields for the left front on a 327 350hp. The inner shield has a hole in it for fitting around the temp. sender. The outer shield does not have a provision for going over the top of the high point on the inner shield. The package for the outer shield says that it fits a 66-68 left front.
So I dug out the judging manual and on page 51 it claims that the 68 shielding has no opening for the temp sender for either left front or right rear side because the sender is located on the intake manifold.
That would be great but there is no provision for the sender in the manifold.
It also states that there is no threaded hole in the thermostat housing for the sending unit. Can some one shed some light on this?

Did you check the casting number of your engine's intake manifold to what's listed in the Judging Guide? What's stated about the temp sender being mounted in the intake vs. either the cylinder heads or in the thermostat covers is correct for 1968...

I have also seen that statement in the juding manual but my original owner 68 327 350hp convertible is just as you describe it. The temp sensor is on the head, driverside with both inner and outer shields having a large opening to clear the sender and the wire. Sounds like you need a different outer shield. I have my original ones so I have not tried to get any new ones. I would check Paragon.

Re: 1968 327 temp sending unit

I found another intake that was dated November 67 and that had a threaded water port to the lower left of the thermostat housing.Than I found another manifold dated December 67 that did not have a provision for a sender.
The manifold for this car is dated February 68.3919803.
Paragon list a inner shield with a sender hole and a hump on top for 68-75 years. There outer shield is straight with out a hole which covers 66-68.
There must be a early and late conflict with this part.

I suspect you are right about your early/late comment. My car is a very late, almost last as I bought it new in August of 1968, when the 69's were on the dealers floor. It has a lot of the characteristics of the 69 in other areas. My outer shield has a hump in it much like the inner shield so that the sensor wire can exit the exhaust area. I have found other areas of the judging manual to be incorrect with respect to the 68. I try to let Chuck Berge (68,69 Team Leader) know when I find one of these things. That year is a very difficult year to document due to all the changes they were making during the production time. There were a couple or recalls that I had that changed even more. I provided a copy to Chuck so that the changes could be planned in the next revision.

My #19310 327/350 68 that has never been apart has the temp sender in the head also. Intake has no spot for sending unit.

The 4th edition 68-69 states "Small block heads in both 68 and 69 are drilled and tapped on the side for the temperature sending unit". And that's where my x4888 327/350hp temp. unit is located.

I just wanted to say thanks to everybody who responded to my question.
I was glad that I was backed up on this problem that I had.
Now if we can get the aftermarket companies to correct there listings.
                  Thanks again !!!
