Removing handle from hood release cable

Before I make a mistake has any one taken the handle off of a hood release cable on a 1957. I have had some that are loose and some one had put a pin threw it, but this one is tight. I want to rechrome the handle and the base and replace the cables. As always Thanks for any help john

The handle on my '59 came off in my hand after I pulled on it repeatedly after the spiral wound cables dried up. I was driving the car daily and did not clean and lube the cables regularly. A little bit of JB Weld and it's been fine for years.
