    69 odometer reset to 00000?

Roger Scott at Corvette Insturment Service has my tach and speedometer . He asked me what to set the odometer to. It has 50904 reading on it now but the cable is broke so I don't know what the real reading is. I am doing a complete resto on the car. Do I reset the odometer to 00000 or leave it where it is or somithing in between> Thanks Brad

Laws vary by State, but most allow resetting the odo to ZERO when the car is an antique classic that's undergoing a total restoration. From your perspective, IF your State allows this AND you're doing a complete makeover, doesn't it make sense to zero the odometer to regain oil change intervals, and other mileage related maintenance issues?

When my odometer quit turning on my 1970 model in 1974 I did not replace the speedometer assembly the next day. A short time later I installed a brand new speedometer that of course had no miles. I recorded the mileage from the old odometer so I would have a close calculation of how many miles my car has accumulated in the past 37 years. I do not know what the law actually is on this. If I was doing it I would have it set on the mileage it had when you sent it in. Keep the receipt for work and have Roger note on the receipt what the mileage was and just tell the buyer what you know.

          Brad,

I think I'd set to where it was, unless you are doing a total body-off restoration. (Then all the cars are suspect )

I was in the same situation when I sent my speedo in for restoration. I just told them to set the odometer to the number that they found it, about 61 K.

I'd put the exact miles and add what you think could have been driven since it quit. My 67 had 45k when my dad bought it, he could not have driven more than 10k miles when he owned it so I always add 10k when it comes up. There were signs that this car had low miles, never left the valley so I'm confidant it's about right. I just think original miles count even after restoration. When I had my speedo repaired it had about 45,500 miles on it so I figured it was a 55k mile car. I just checked and wow my car has about 54,500 since 03 not to bad, I'm no Roy Braatz, but I think I put 100 miles on it this week.

Here is a picture after I completed my 50th Anniversary run to Flint MI. This was the total mileage I had driven since leaving Jerry Bramletts shop after he rebuilt my car. The trip meter shows the miles plus 1k when I got the car back to Burbank.

Thanks Dale. I forgot to mention I still have my original speedometer with its original mileage that will go with the car if the person wants it.
