    Re: 67 Steering Wheels

Something that Joe mentioned that I wasn't aware of is the fact that the 9748390 68 wheel was also available on several other GM cars of that year. That would mean there were likely a LOT more 68 wheels made and sold than the 67 wheel.

Another reason why there may be a lot more 68 wheels floating around today is the fact that by June 1971, the original 9746195 67 wheel had been discontinued and replaced in service by the 9748390 68 wheel so someone ordering/purchasing what they thought was a correct 67 wheel from GM, actually received the 68 style wheel instead. In fact, a 1973 printing of the parts book shows that the 68 wheel also became the service replacement for all 63-68 Corvettes. (no mention of the fact that the 68 wheel wouldn't even fit properly on a 63-66 hub)

Mike, I guess the thing I have learned out of this is to look at those "slick" sterring wheels real close, who knows when a person may find a very nice 68 wheel. I alos learned that all brown plastic wheels did not have grain. Thanks again to you and all of the other guys that posted a response. Keith

              Thanks Keith,

The wheel looks really nice (almost too nice). Too bad I just spent about the same for an original '68 wheel with no cracks or bows (on a shelf since mid '70's).

Did the wheels have that level of shine (as the repro) when they were new, or were they a little on the dull side?

              Anthony

                Re: 67 Steering Wheels

Anthony, The first new Corvette I bought was a 67 and we do want to understand that has been several years ago, but being it was my first there are a lot of things I remember very well but the gloss on the steering wheel was not one of those that stuck to me the wide orange valve cover was where I foucoused my attention. I can remember their not being a ton of gloss on the wheel. Surely not dull, but I do remeber it having the grain. This was a late car I would say late June or early July production as the 68's soon arrived after I purchased my car. I am hearing the reproduction wheels are way too glossy and I hear also they are fatter. Thanks for your response. Keith
