    C 1 engine oil & solid lifters-issues?

Just got my copy of On Solid Ground and they had a small article about the reduced zinc content in the newer motor oils that may not provide enough protection for solid lifters. It says that the reduction in zinc increases the life of catalytic converters and reduces pollutants, but the "SM rated oil will be squeezed/wiped from the area between the cam and the lifter producing constant scuffing." It says to avoid the problem, use older engine oil with SH, SJ, and SL ratings.

Anyone have issues with newer oil and any remedies/suggestions. I just had my '58 290 engine completely rebuilt and don't want to create a problem with the solid lifters.

Steve suggest that you search the archives for this subject. Basically the concensus is to use 15W-40 "diesel" oil. Personal preference is Shell Rotella 15W-40. I run this in everything I own.

        Steve,

In the last 2-3 years alone, this subject has been literally beaten-to-death on this forum. Some incredibly knowledgeable people have posted their thoughts on the subject.

Like Dick said - use diesel oil in all older engines and you will be fine.

You can buy it nearly anywhere - auto part stores, Costco, Sam's Club, etc.

Wow Dickie, Old JD learned something new today. Hey DW you are not supposed to name oil brands here as you would get in some serious trouble.
Yes there are at least 1000 or more posts available that contain a lot more than I care to remember.
I heard a rumor at our Pittsburgh Chapter seminar this past Sunday. Someone said that GM just re-issued or came out with the EOS again.
Anyone know about this??? I don't mean the crap that I mistakening bought thinking it was the real deal for the oil. I bought EOS assembly lube. #1052367. Question Joe Lucia etal is the old EOS stuff for the oil available once again? Art Colussy said it just came on the market a month ago. John D.

Joe, Thanks some really good information sir. I think if you have time make a new post at the top of the page here and tell the folks so they don't miss it. Probably repackaged EOS but who cares. At least its availabe for now anyhow. Thanks again, John
