    Fan clutch storage

How should the fan clutch be stored? Mounting hub up, down, or sideways?

        Fan clutch storage

I'm pretty sure that the GM fan clutch I bought recently specifically states on the box (or the clutch?) to store it horizontally with the mounting hub up.

That's what Fred Olivia recommends also, mounting hub up.

Does that mean I have to hang my car by the rear bumpers from the garage rafters?

Fred told me sideways when he mailed mine back.

Rev Mike, We covered this detail at a seminar not to long ago. Bill Calarico was putting on a wonderful seminar about clutch fans. Bill said that the best way to store them is just like Gary said. Store them like it would be mounted on the car. This helps prevent the oil from running out. John

John, aren't you stating just the opposite to what Gary is saying? He is saying horizontally, with the hub up but you say "mounted on the car" which is vertical. Am I missing something?

In the box, GM says 2 ways, depending on type

Sweitzer (bi-metallic strip) type says, ink-stamped right on the strip, "THIS SIDE UP".

Eaton (bimetallic coil) type has stamped on the face "STORE THIS FACE DOWN", in 2 places (at least on the later production).

And yes, vertical (as mounted on water pump hub) is also acceptable [and necessary], but not for long term storage, IMHO.

                            Just following instructions

Wayne is correct - that's just what Oliva said at the session he ran at last years National.
