    '70 flywheel mount

Today I pulled my engine so and removed the pressure plate and flywheel. The clutch plate is still in great shape so I plan on reusing and only replacing the throwout bearing. I marked the pressure plate in reference to the flywheel for re-mount. When I pulled the flywheel to mount the block to the engine stand I also marked it in reference to the crank. Problem: There is an alingment hole in both the pressure plate and crank mounting surface, however the alingment holes on the crank and flywheel were not lined up. The flywheel was turned on mounting hole out of alingment with the alingment hole on the crank. (I'm confusing myself)

When I put it all back together should I line up the holes, or put it back together the way that I took it apart.

I am not touching the bottom end of the motor, rather I am only re-building the heads.

I did have a vibration starting about 3500 up through about 4200 rpm but unsure of the source. The vibration was present in all gears at that rpm, and was slightly there even in neutral.

I am going to also go through the tranny at this point seeings how it is out of the car.

all small block chevy except 400 cu in ones are internally balanced so if the flywheel was not used to balance the engine it does not matter how it was on the crank. if i were you i would have the flywheel balanced and then have the pressure plate balanced. do NOT balance the flywheel with the pressure plate attached.

what are the advantages on balancing the flywheel and pressure plate separately instead of as a unit?

if you ever have to change pressure plates you only have to balance the pressure plate instead of having to pull the flywheel and it is not nessisary to index the pressure plate to the flywheel.
