    1962 Corvette Jack?

    A question is for the straight axle guys. I got a jack with some mixed years of Corvette parts, that I am trying to ID if it is a Corvette jack or just a replacement from another car or truck. The guy I got it from swears it is a Corvette jack, but I am not so sure. I know it is not a 53-61 or a 63 up jack. From what I can gather, an original 1962 Corvette jack should have an "A" for the manufacturer, stamped in the base. Where on the base would it be located? This jack is all stamped steel with a 4"x6" base, but the top pad is only 1 7/8" wide and 4" long. Did the 1962 Corvette's use a 1 year only jack? Anyone have a picture they could email me? Thanks in advance. Dave

    Dave, I am no expert n the 62 cars, but I belive the only difference between all other C1 Jacks and the 62 is the much coarser threads. I belive that the #'s cast into the base and everything elese is the same. John

      John,

      This jack has a stamped steel base, not cast. If the 1962 jack is the same as the earlier cars, other than the threads, then I would guess this is out of some other car or truck. Thank for your help. Dave

        The 62 also uses a different handle.

          '62 jacks are different from '53s-'61s and '63 on up. Differences are:

          1. threads (One is fine, the other coarse, but I forget which.);
          2. thingy where the handle goes; and,
          3. "SJ nnnn" is stamped in the base.

          If someone doesn't chime in with what the 4 digits are, I will when I get home tonight.

          Other than those 3 characteristics above, they are the same, and are often mistaken for one another.

            Dave, with all due respect to what's been said before, a 53-61 jack has a cast base. A 62 jack has a stamped steel base. The 62 jack, in fact, less the base, is identical right side up or upside down. The "bottom" lifting saddle is spot welded to the base, and that process is the Achilles heel of the 62-only jack. I've met three different original owners of 62's who indicated that their jack broke within the first few months, and then they "went out and got a real jack."
            The 53-61 jack is an SJ4653 casting. Nothing has changed on either of those jacks since John Amgwert and I did an article on them in the Restorer back in about 1977. Mike Ernst

              Mike,

              Thanks for the info. This does not have the same plate top and bottom. The
              top is quite a bit smaller (4" long X 1 7/8" wide), so I doubt it is a Corvette jack. Thanks for your help. Dave
