I HAVE A MUNCIE 4 SPD IN MY 66 THAT I'M NOT SURE WHAT YEAR OF WHAT IT'S OUT OF. THE NUMBERS ARE: SIDE VERTICAL J211948 SIDE PLATE 3884685 RIGHT SIDE FRONT 3851325 RIGHT SIDE TAIL SHAFT 3846429. ANY ASSISTANCE WOULD BE APPRIATED.

    Jim------

Well, you have a Muncie that's made up of a "mixture" of components. This is not unusual since most Muncie components are interchangeable. Your main case, casting #3851325, was used for 1964-65 Muncies. It has the 7/8" cluster gear shaft. Your side cover, GM casting #3884685, was used for 1966-68 Muncies. And, your extension housing, GM #3846429, was used for 1964 through mid-1965 Muncies.

The "J211948" is the VIN derivative of the car that the Muncie main case was first installed in. The "J" refers to the Janesville, WI assembly plant and the "211948" is the production sequence. Since Janesville was building full size passenger cars during the 64-65 time period, I'd say that your transmission's main case was part of a transmission originally installed in a 1964 or 1965 full size Chevrolet passenger car.

Muncie transmissions used across all car lines for a particular model year are, essentially, the same.

A good site to find info on transmissions including Muncies is www.5speeds.com
