I had my 66 327 out yesterday and was checking the timing, and adjusting the carb. That was the first time it has been run since I had it apart last fall, and replaced the intake/carb with an edelbrock perfromer setup. I set the timing, and decided to check the manifold vacuum. It made about 14", but the needle fluttered rapidly in a small sweep on either side of the 14" mark. Also, the car idles quite rough, and starts hard when its cold. When the engine is warm though, iy fires right away. I figure I have a vacuum leak between the carb and the intake (I have read that there is an adapter required when using a square flange carb on a dual pattern intake, to prevent such leaks, which i don't have). what else could cause the erratic vacuum reading, and the rough idle? Thanks in advance, Dan

Re: 327 Idle Problems
Typical shop approach is to 'probe' with a can of carb cleaner. Spritz here/there probing the boundary of intake to block, carb to intake being careful NOT to squirt excess and/or get it into the carb airhorn-intake. When you hit vac leak point(s), engine RPM will jump (pretty crisply)--a few hundred RPM that's noticeable.
This will let you find leaks that can be (1) bad gasket, (2) under torque, (3) hairline cracks in cast parts. If she checks out sound all around (cheap & quick test), you go to phase II looking for other items that are harder/tougher.- Top
