    Trunk mat

Does anyone at this time make a correct trunk mat for my 60? I remember a while back hearing about someone who was getting ready to tool up on a new mat that would fix some of the issues with older repro mats. Thanks John

    Re: Trunk mat

Corvette Concepts by Crown, the only manufacturer of C1 trunk mats, is OUT OF BUSINESS. Knoch has no plans to tool up according to Dale Robertson.

C1 trunk mats are no longer available.

Those with NOS 61-62 mats are talking $1,000.00 each! A 59-60 mat would command $1600.00 or so! Even new reproductions when located are fetching $500.00.

      Re: Trunk mat

John, I have my original mat and I looked at a 60 surivior this week in Fl. The trunk mats were solid colored, with the mat number in the center back. No logos or date code. Now that NCRS in the Fourth Edition has changed and not says that all mats were BLACK and vinyl colored to match interior trim color. and the part numbers were Inked on. You can buy a black mat from Al Knoch and use Vinyl paint and paint it the color of you interior trim and Ink a part number on it. You will be NCRS correct. Not Original.

        Re: Trunk mat

        Knoch doesn't have any more.

Also unless the reverse side of the mat has a burlap texture, it's not NCRS correct. The reproductions NEVER had a correct underside. All original mats were solid black and vinyl dye was used to achieve color on the top side. The black mats had embossed numbers while the colors had printed numbers. All up-side down. The year date and "US" were embossed.

I wish we could use the terms embossed, debossed and printed to describe part numbers and other markings. This usage would preclude confusion.

        Dale.

John, I believe the company you are referring to is Romeo Engineering. I have not heard whether they have actually done anything on the trunk mat project.

Thanks all, It was the Romeo Engineering project that I was talking about. Guess I will call them and ask when if ever they plan on releasing them. John

              Re: Trunk mat

I called Romeo Engineering today, but no answer (big snow and ice storm up this way today - they probably stayed home); they placed an ad in the Detroit paper last spring offering big bucks to borrow a genuine NOS '56-'57 trunk mat to use as a pattern to develop production tooling for reproductions.

                Re: Trunk mat

After reading these postings, I inspected the trunk mat in my 1961. The mat seems to be an original red mat with the part no. 3783835. No. 60 in a circle, and another circle with hard to read letters. There are some white letters and numbers on the black side of the mat, but they are not legible. The mat was painted blue by the previous owner to match the original jewel blue interior. Should I look to barter the 3783835 mat for an original blue, or re-dye the mat to the 1961 blue? Other than the flaking blue paint or dye, the matt is in very good condition.
                Thanks! Ray

                  Key Question:

What does the back surface look like?

                    Re: Key Question:

The back of the mat is textured flat black and has very tiny and close dimples or dots. There are also parallel grooves front to back and a groove around the outer edege of the mat.

                      Re: Trunk Mat Repro Status

I talked to Romeo Engineering today, and status is as follows - the molds are done, and the sheet material is due in 4 weeks, with prototypes ready 2-3 weeks afte that. They expect to have '56-'57 mats ready to ship in 10-12 weeks. As soon as that's up and running, they're starting on the '58-'60 mats.

                        Sounds Like

you have an original mat and changing the color is not a problem at all. Is the part number printed or embossed?

                        Dale.

                          Re: Sounds Like

The number on the mat is embossed on top (toward seats) center edge.

                          Thanks for the Help!
