I have surface rust on the frame and related components. Unfortunately, I don't have the expertise of $ for a frame off restoration, so I bought some POR-15 rust paint and have cleaned out the engine compartment so as to be able to reach most areas. The plan is to buff off as much rust as possible, clean with marine clean, apply a metal ready etching and then paint with the chasis black POR-15. Before I begin, any advice Has anyone ever used this paint? How did it work? Thanks as always, Jim Hansen.

i would have chosen the por 15 rust prev paint and not the chassis black. both will work good but the red can por 15 black rust inhib paint is tougher. i use por 15 alot on my vette resorations and have had great luck with it. stay away from the silver though, it changes color in the sun.- Top

I didn't have the time nor money for a frame off but actually put the car on jack stands,layed on my back, and sand blasted the entire frame except the top edge.
The president of the local Chevy club said "I see you did a frame off" as he peered under the car. Just a thought if you have any kind of a garage and a air compressor. I never liked coating anything but bare metal!- Top

Being a Por-15 distributor, let me say that the chassis black is an excellent product. But they suggest for best protection, you should first coat with Por-15 black, and before it fully dries, recoat with chassis black. If you allow the Por-15 black to dry, it must be sanded with wet or dry sand paper first, not an option on a chassis.
Both the Por-15 black and silver are UV sensitive. Both will discolor if exposed to sun light over time.- Top

USE GLOVES, dont get any of that stuff on you....
...because it wont come off your skin! Also, it definitely adhered better to rusty metal. I put some on some clean metal and it flaked right off...- Top

funny you said that. iv'e had it flake of sandblasted metal also (exhaust manifolds) it definately adheres better to untouched metal surfaces. i think sand blasting first hurt it way more than it helped it.- Top

Did it in stages over a long period of time. The engine and transmission were out during the first stage.Blasted all accessable areas with "Sand".
Removed the rear end and finished the rear part of the frame and detailed the the differential assy.
I have yet to remove the complete front suspension for detailing. Got tired of this type of work.
I did not blast any of the body. Wiped it down by hand and left "as is". Only a slight paint overspray from the factory.
Do advise cleaning the residue from the metal that is left from the blasting. I had one area where peeling occurred.
This is a long time driver project and my personal therapy for coping. I'm in no rush.
Currently preparing to replace the dash pad, then the windshield, door window components, and then the interior. Might even be finished by the time I retire!- Top

Thanks and follow-up Q re painting nuts
Thanks to all for your information and support. One additional thing I was wondering about. The plan is to refresh the nuts and bolts whereever possible rather than paint them. However, if a nut in place does happen to get painted, will the POR 15 rust preventive paint "glue" it into place? Or will it still come loose afterwards with a little persuasion? I'm just trying to figure out how careful I need to be. Thanks again to everyone, Jim Hansen.- Top
