    Side Exhaust or Not???

I am trying to determine the clues that would determine whether or not my car had side exhaust "orginally". I think we have discussed these "clues" several times in great depth, however.. this point has not been clearly explained. Did side exhaust cars still have the holes in the frames for attaching the ground straps?? Was the hole present but not threaded??

Yes, the hole in the cross brace is there but has not been tapped. You also want to make sure no one has drilled it over size to get rid of the threads.

    Good luck,

The most tell-tale item would be the notches cut into body sub framwork. They are under the rocker panels at the screw holes. The AIM shows this modification.

It's always been my understanding that the hex head screws used to attach the groundstraps to the frame at the center exhaust support were self tapping. Thoughts?

Yes, they are self tapping and they do leave a thread mark on the hole which could be removed by over sizing the hole. That's why I would suggest checking the hole diameter if thread markings are not detected.

            Are you suggesting...

Someone would try to create a "fake" sidepipe car by reaming these holes?

He! He! I don't think anyone with significant experience in the vintage Corvette hobby is naive enough not to believe that counterfeiting has become a science.

                I could tell you stories...

In my other life as a 64-73 Mustang technical writer. How many red Mustang convertibles started out red? My guess, 10%. More on the point of this thread, the 65-69 Mustang was available as a GT, which included such items as performance suspension, disc brakes, dual exhaust, 4V engine. Having this package can enhance the value of a given car 10-30%. It does not appear (other than the 4V carb) in the VIN, so countless GT's have been faked over the years, many of which I have sadly had to reveal to people. One thing which helps- The original factory orders for 67-up were recovered a few years ago. Now prospective buyers can nail 'ya for having the wrong tires. On the early cars, well, there are ways, if you look close enough, but I'd rather not say (dishonest people have computers, too). One last thing- on that screw hole thing, you better look closer than that, 'cause there are people out there who could make it any size you want, with or without threads.

Did I read that correctly? If so how can we access these 67 Factory Orders? For Corvettes of course! Thanks Joel 67 L71

No, '67 factory orders are not available (or any other Corvette paperwork prior to 1981).
