Is there an easy way to identify an original vs. repop hubcap for my 60? I weighed both and found the original to be 2lbs 10.9oz and the repop was 2lbs 6.2oz. Also, the screws that hold the center ring were not plated on the original and were plated on the repop. Any other easy to identify differences?

Re: 60 Hubcaps
Dale, is smack chrome plating different than regular chrome plating? I'm trying to decide if I should purchase repro hubcaps for my '58, or restore my originals. Two of the originals would need some professional straightening. The original spinners are probably too pitted for rechroming. Thanks for any advice.- Top

Re: 60 Hubcaps
Smack chrome plating uses reverse polarity and leaves a chrome thickness thinner than flash chrome plating. It was more cost effective at GM than having stainless polishers. Abrasive polishes should be avoided on all stainless trim in order to preserve this chrome which appears "ice-blue" in sunlight.
Try to salvage the original wheelcovers if at all possible since the reproductions have a "yellowish" hue about them and the stamping is much different from originals. An experienced eye views this deviant stamping much as a sore thumb. The yellow appearance adds insult to injury.
Several of the vendors have original wheelcovers for sale.
The Z0-6 brand reproduction spinners are excellent parts and usually pass as originals on the judging field.
