    1971 LT-1 TI Distributor/Amp... wiring routing..?

I'm in the process of pursuing & purchasing the last item my car needs to be fully correct... a complete TI distributor/amp/coil/harness for my 71 LT-1.

Can anyone advise me on the correct mounting location and mounting configuration of the amplifier, I know they were mounted in the front left corner of the vehicle, but how......horizontal....vertical...and what was used to fasten it to the car....?
Also, how was the TI wiring harness routed and clamped exactly in the engine bay from the amplifier to the distributor, was this routed along the drivers side fender and across the top of the engine bay with everything else or in some other fashion...??

any help or pictures from other LT-1 owners would be helpful

    thanks in advace.....

    Chuck,

The exact location of the TI amplifier is not consistent. You are correct it is to the outboard of the core support on the front of the fiberglass panel that is the front of the driver's side wheel housing. I have seen one inboard enough that it rubs the hood as it opens and others (most of them) so far outboard that one judges them by the braille method. The mounting fasteners can be seen from the driver's side wheel well.

They are mounted with the long dimension horizontally, but I don't know what kid of fasteners or mounting is used. It is hard enough to see the amplifier, much less how it is mounted. On those that are close enough to the hood opening to see them the TI sticker is on the top side.

An illustration should be in the 1971 Assembly Instruction Manual, including routing for the wire harness. An AIM is a good thing to have.

          Terry,

thanks for the e-mail response back and info on the Amp mounting.

I do have a 71 AIM manual but either I'm missing the section on the TI system or it was a supplemental addition to the manual which I don't have.....

What section should it be in, it is not in my LT-1 options section anywhere, maybe I'm missing it as the manual I have was given to me from the previous owner. Do you or any others have the section that could be scanned and e-mailed...??

          thanks in advance....
          Chuck

            Re: 1971 LT-1 TI

Chuck, You really need the page for TI in the aim. You should already have the three holes in your front left fender for mounting the box. The box or amplifier has a short "pigtail" harness that plugs into the TI harness just inside the hood hinge. The TI harness has dull cloth black tape. There is a clamp in that area for the TI harness end and the ground wire for the box.(should be a hole there) The harness then follows the regular harness (headlamp etc.) with the glossy black tape back to the firewall. You need to see that page!

Mine is a 70 and is as follows:
It's mounted horizontal with the wire connections at the bottom. Three wires comming out; red, grey, and black. the pig-tail is about 12 inches long and comes just to the engine side of the radiator support, following the path of the wire harness through the support. It then connects to the ti harness with the same three colors of wires, and followes the wire harness along the fender and up the firewall.

The grey and red wire go to the distributor, the red wire also has a white wire tapped into it and goes to the ignition switch at the ignition switch connector.

The black wire from the amplification box is factory butt spliced to a white wire that continues to the + side of the coil.

The amplification box has a ground wire on the lower left mounting bolt that joines an existing ground connection at the middle of the radiator support, front side. Also connected to the same grounded mounting bolt is another black wire that follows the ti wires and goes to the neg side of the coil.

I have the aim page that shows canceled, I can send that tomorrow along with a wiring diagram, as the aim page is not very detailed.

                Chuck,

That page is not in my 1971 AIM either. Given that it says Cancelled in the 1970 AIM (K66 option) I suppose it is logical it is not in the 1971.

I'll send you that page from the 1970 AIM, but I do not have a wiring diagram.
