    69 Odometer Rebuild

Some time ago the odometer quit working. The car is in for paint so I decided to rebuild the odometer. Is this something that is best left to professionals. It doesn't look that complicated. Any suggestions as to who to use if I have it rebuilt. Are the worm gears still available? Who are the suppliers for the parts to rebuild the odometer.

    Thanks

    Re: 69 Odometer Rebuild

I didn't really rebuild my 70 speedometer. What I did was just buy a new one from GM when you could years ago. It came with a white numbers face. I used it for for about 15 years and about 6-7 years ago I removed it.
I still had my old one and just twisted the needle counter-clock-wise and it came off of both units. Removed the two screws that retained the facing and switched out the face plates and put my original green one back in the car.
Even replaced the trip cable with a NOS part that I had bought many years ago becasue my original was stiff, although it would work.
If you can find a vender to sell you a new speedometer mechanical part, it is not to difficult to replace. Lossen the firewall attachments for the steering column and the remove the bolts that secure the steering column to the dash to lower the steering column to give you room to lower the dash. It does not have to come out. I have done this about 5-6 times to replace light switches and speedometers and I can say its not hard. Just be patient.

Thanks for the input. The speedo works fine just the odometer quit. It looks like I need to replace the worm gear closest to the speedometer. I like your idea of replacing the entire guts. I will try to locate a used one.
