    #4 Body Mount Help

I am changing out all the body mounts on my 65 roadster and am dealing with some rust issues. I have purchased new caged nuts for the #4 mounts as the old ones were badly rusted and had to be cut out with a die grinder. How can I rivet the new cages in without removing the body reinforcements? They are in great shape and I see no reason to mess with them. The only way I can see to do this is drill through the reinforment and install the rivets, but that isn't the right way ??
Another question, how high can I lift the body off the frame to change the mounts before I get in trouble??

    Thank you,

    George

George, the correct way is to remove the body mount reinforcement, but the practical way is, as you say, drill thru the mount and rivet that way. If you flatten the rivets out on the bottom, it will not cause any problem. How far you lift the body depends on what you have disconnected. If you have everything off the car (ie bumpers, brake lines, seat belt cables, mufflers, steering rag joint, etc), then you can lift as high as you want, if everything is still connected, I would think that any amount of movement is going to give you a mess of trouble. If you havent figured it out, the cages are a lot easier to put in if the decklid springs are removed (rdstr only) Good luck. Brandon

      Brandon,

Thank you for the information. I did remove the deck lid and hinges, I am also putting heat barrier, underlayment and new carpet in the car so it makes it a lot easier to work around. I have ordered new springs, as one of them has some pretty bad rust on the bottom hook.
This brings up another question, in the judging manual it states that the underside of the deck lid and all hardware is painted body color, without specific mention of the hinge assemblies and springs, do you know if they should be body color also??

      Thank you,

      George

        Springs

Pretty sure they should be body color, but only as an "overspray" type of coverage. In other words, they were not covered during the painting process. I believe they were black primer underneath, so black with body color over that should be correct. That's how I'm doing mine. If I'm wrong, someone else will probably correct me.
