    64 Muncie countershaft leak

Any fixes out there short of trashing case for a weeping countershaft? Mine leaks in the front. Silicone has not held. Has anyone tried machining a groove in the case and fitting an o-ring? Comments / ideas would be appreciated.

Michael, If anybody can do it, the "Old Man" can do it. Old Man Engineering just outside of Buffalo NY specializes in transmissions for racing and has a great selection of used parts too. He likes to do modifications on Muncies etc. I have purchased several used parts/modifcations from him and have no complaints. He recomended extra O-ring seals for my side cover shifter shafts in addition to the factory style lip seals (apologies to the purists out there) The web site isn't much but if you call him, he will be very happy to help. Real nice guy. I guess the secret is out now.

    -Mark.

Fel-Pro form a gasket will do it. High temp RTV also. However you will have to get it on the shaft/hole, not just wipe it on the front. I.E. remove rear bearing retainer and knock shaft back and clean throughly. Use of "O" ring would make it very difficult to push through cluster gear. You could also drill case to accept the 1" shaft.

Most competent machine shops can drill the hole and install a bushing to restore the proper diameter for the countershaft; Jerry MacNeish ( www.z28camaro.com ) does it all the time to save 7/8" countershaft cases.

I haven't done it yet, but I have the same issue, did some checking and was told the same thing Larry said - thin layer inside the case. I have found the Permatex 'The Right Stuff' to be a pretty amazing sealant/gasket product.
