    A.I.R. question for Joe Lucia

    Joe,
You posted a history and usage for the A.I.R. systems awhile back (Oct 99, http://216.122.167.32/forum/archive2.cgi?read=15694 ) and stated that all 76 and 77 Vettes used CCS except for Calif and High Altitude cars which used the A.I.R.

What about the 76/77 L82s? I thought all the L82s used A.I.R. You went on in that post to state that the 78/79 L82 use A.I.R. while the others use CCS.

Just confused about the L82 issue for 76/77.

    Tom------

The information that I have indicates that, except for California and high altitude emissions, all 1976 and 1977 used CCS. However, I'll further research and cross-check this later; it's possible that there exists an error in the information.

However, while AIR was generally used on higher performance engines, there are notable exceptions that come to mind. The 1970 L-46, which was basically a high compression version of the later L-82, used CCS.

      Tom-----

I've done some more research on this question and I've come up with some new information or, at least, new questions.

First of all, I'll deal with the 1977 model year. For that year, the information which I presented in my first post of a few years ago is incorrect with respect to L-82s. All 1977 L-82s, with the POSSIBLE exception of federal emissions with auto transmission DID use the air injection reactor system. As far as 77 L-82s with federal emissions and auto trans, if they were originally supplied with an emissions label of code "CA" [note: this does NOT refer to California emissions], then they were originally equipped with AIR. If they were originally supplied with emissions label of code of "CB" or "AZ" (which is very unlikely), then they were also equipped with AIR. If they were originally supplied with emissions label "AY" (which is also HIGHLY UNLIKELY), then they were NOT equipped with AIR. If they were supplied with some other emissions label code, then I don't know what they should have in the way of emissions equipment.

For 1976 I have found conflicting information. However, I now believe that ALL 1976 L-82s were likely equipped with AIR. If a 1976 L-82 was originally supplied with emissions label coded "XY" (which is the code which I now believe that all 1976 L-82s were supplied with), then they were originally equipped with AIR. If they were supplied with emissions label coded "XZ" (which is VERY UNLIKELY, in my opinion), then they were also AIR-equipped. If they were originally supplied with emissions label code "XX"(which I believe was ONLY used for L-48s), then they did not have AIR. However, I now really believe that all 1976 with L-82 were originally supplied with the "XY" coded emissions label and WERE equipped with AIR.
