I'm attempting to get a vehicle history report on a '75 that I'm looking at. CARFAX only goes back to '81. Is there any vehicle history service with a database that goes back to '75? Also, the VIN# on this appears to be 13 characters...is that correct? (CARFAX says VIN is ALWAYS 17 characters.)

I don't know of any vehicle history database that can help you, but the 13-digit VIN is legitimate - 17-digit VINs didn't start until 1981.

In looking up the past history of a car you need to send vin# with a fee to the state the car is currently registered in. Call the state DMV and ask what the fee is for a title search. After a couple of weeks you'll get every paper that has to do with that car in that state. If the car came into the state from another that will show on the first title app. for the state and will show the state it came from. You repeat the above again for that state and so on until you reach back to the first time records are shown.
Your vin should be something like 1Z37J5S4xxxxx (13 digits)
