    Engle (sp?) camshafts..??

    I have been advised that my ' 68 L71 was fitted to a 1968 L88 factory grind camshaft supplied by Engle in 1977...??? Does anyone have any knowledge of this mfg. or it's reputation..?? The engine work was performed by Traco Engineering. Tks,Jeff B.

    Yes, Engle was a camshaft manufacturer of good repute and their products were popular in the 60s and 70s. They were in the same "league" as Iskenderian, Crower, and Crane.

    As I recall, Engle, Iskenderian, and Crower were all southern California companies. In fact, it seems to me that Engle was located in Culver City and I think that Traco was, too. You can be sure that if Traco used an Engle piece in one of their engines, that's a testament to the high quality of an Engle product.

    I don't know if Engle is still in business or not. I haven't heard anything about them in a long while.

      I'm glad to be able to report that Engle Cams is still in business after 60 years and is located in Santa Monica, CA. You can "dial them up" on the web at www.englecams.com

      One of their specialties these days seems to be Volkswagen "Bug" performance camshafts, but they still make camshafts for many other applications. They probably needed to find a "niche" market to survive the market onslaught of the mass-marketing cam companies like Competition Cams and Crane.

      It's nice to see, though, that one of the old-time, southern California performance manufacturers is still around. Unknown to many folks, once-upon-a-time most of the cars that competed at Indianapolis were built in southern California performance shops in the San Gabriel and San Fernando Valley. Also, Meyer-Drake Engineering and Offenhauser supplied the engines that once dominated Indianapolis competition. In those days, if you didn't have an "Offy", you couldn't compete at the "Brickyard".

      They're mostly all gone, though, as are many of the southern California performance products companies that once supplied the "hot rod" market with specialty parts.

        Joe: Yep, those were the good 'ol days! I seem to have been able to procure a most unique Corvette; one that is an original, one-owner L71 that has had some massaging by one of the most well-respected engineering race shops in the hey-day of performance, engine compression, and good 'ol American big block horsepower!           I ran Iskenderian cams in my AA/FD dragster back in '61-'62, and met Ed several times back then while touring with the car on the West Coast circuit; and Iskenderian is still in the cam business, too. Remember Isky "5-Cycle" cams?

            Yes, Isky is still around, too. They are in Gardena, CA. Isky does not really mass-market their products anymore, but they still supply some of the highest quality camshafts and valve train components that can be purchased anywhere. They are among the elite "Cadillac" of camshaft manufacturers.
