    66 Big Block Valve covers.

Is it possible that 66 427/390 hydrolic lifter engines came from the factory with no drippers in the valve covers and 427/425 mechical lifter engines had drippers in the valve covers? Thanks.

My all original (early) 390/427 66 has drippers on the valve covers.

      Rick-----

I can tell you this much: for 1966, Corvettes with L-36 were SCHEDULED to have DIFFERENT valve covers than those with L-72. The part numbers (which, unfortunately, don't appear on the valve covers) are as follows:

      left, with L-36--------GM #3880821

      right, with L-36-------GM #3880822

      left, with L-72--------GM #3877635

      right, with L-72-------GM #3877632

Also, in 1966 the above-referenced L-36 valve covers for either side carried a GM list price of $4.62/each. The valve covers for the L-72 for either side carried a GM list price of $4.96/each. This would imply that the L-36 valve covers may have had something "lesser" or less expensive to manufacture than the L-72 valve covers.

Thanks Bill and Joe. Can anyone advise if running hyd.lifter engine without drippers in valve covers can cause engine damage. Thanks.

          Rick------

Many Chevrolet big blocks with hydraulic lifters were built with valve covers without the drippers. In fact, this included the vast majority of them. So, I'd say this represents very good proof that big blocks suffer no adverse consequences without the drippers.

Personally, I hate the "scars" which the projection welds leave on the exterior surface of the valve covers, especially the 68-70 style chrome valve covers. If I use stock-type rockers on my "ZL-1" and if I decide to use drippers, at all, I will use epoxy (like JB Weld) to fasten the dripper rails onto the bottom surface of the valve covers. By drilling small holes in the dripper rails and allowing the un-cured epoxy to pass through and "mushroom over", the drippers can be securely and very permanently attached to the inside surface of the valve covers.

Joe,thanks for the information. If possible, I would be interested in hearing from owners/judges who may have seen or have proof that 66 hydraulic lifter big block Corvettes came with dripperless valve covers.

              OK........

------Where do the dimples on the passenger side valve cover come into play?I believe that all 390 horse 66 engines had the AC dimple, whether they had AC or not.Am I right?Do any 425 engines have dimple valvecovers?
------Do any dimple valvecovers have the drippers?Just went and looked at my wifes 12000 serial no.car and have answered my own question,as her dimple covers have drippers.Well, the rest of the questions still stand.Thanks.................Bill S
