Help. I just receivd what is suppose to be the correct diverter valve for my 1968 Tri-Power 400HP A/C car. I purchased it from Crane Corvette Supply in San Diego, CA.. Dave at Cranes swears up and down that it is the correct valve. Problem is, is that it does not match the configuration in the 1968 GM Corvette Assembly manual or any pictures I've seen in the 1968-1972 Vette Vues Fact Book. My Question is, does the valve mount with the T-Fitting on the valve on top (closer to the hood) or on bottom closer to the intake manifold? Cranes claims the valve mounts upside down with the T-Fitting closer to the intake manifold. I cannot seem to get it to fit upside down. The T-Fitting is way too close to the heater hose outlet on the intake manifold. Any help or comments would be much appreciated. Andy

Re: 1968 Smog Pump Diverter Valve
Andy-----
Tell David to stop swearing up and down and getting excited; it's not good for his blood pressure. Anyway, I think that he's wrong on this one.
1968 Corvettes with 427 (all variants) used diverter valve GM #7028296 (PRODUCTION) and GM #7036447 (SERVICE). Both of these valves will have the number "28296" stamped on the valve. It will be stamped on the flat surface immediately adjacent to the flange and will be a small font, rather lightly stamped embossment.
This particular valve was used for all 1968 Corvettes with 427 as well as 1969 with L-88 or ZL-1. In addition to the number that I mentioned, this valve has several other identifying features:
1) the hose connector is a "T" with the nipple ends extending left and right forming the top of the "T" and is oriented on the TOP of the valve. This is the orientation and configuration that is shown in the AIM and is as YOU described;
2) the muffler assembly is attached to the valve with a clamp and is removeable. 1969+ valves have the muffler assembly crimped to the valve body and it is not designed to be removed or serviced seperately (although it can be removed by "uncrimping" it.
3) when properly installed, the muffler will be on the right (passenger) side of the engine with the larger end of the muffler (and the exhaust holes) oriented UPWARD.
Please let us know what the stamped number is on your valve and if it has the other features which I described.In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
