A Corvette friend loaned me about twenty photos showing the first 1963 models being assembled on the "pilot line" during 1962. I've posted nine of these photos at the following site for those of you who want to see them: http://www.lizzard.net/Temp/Car
They are interesting to me because I bought one of the pilot line convertibles late last year. I was surprised to find my car showed up in some of the photos. That's it with the VIN and trim tags showing. I haven't checked my engine yet to see if it is the one in the photos. Since my block has been in the car since the sixties, it may still have the original paint markings on the heads.
There are many details in these photos that are fascinating to me. You can see '62 models in the background of a couple. Notice that the chassis black-out is being done in the body spray booth and that everything is being painted. The FI unit is gone from my car, but I imagine that it originally looked like the one in the last photo. I doubt I'll ever find a funky system like that.
You may have seen some of these photos before. A few from this series were published in the Number 6, 1962 issue of Corvette News. One of the shots from this series appears in Noland Adams' book.
