I am considering buying a Haulmark enclosed trailer, and am looking for comments on their trailers - good or bad. I am probably going to buy either an 18ft or 20 ft trailer, the thought being that either is large enough to haul a C1, and minimizing the trailer size will make an easier towing unit with my half ton truck. Comments?

Re: Trailer Question
John,
If ease of pulling is of prime concern, then an 18'x8' low profile would be a good bet. I recently purchased a 20' with a 6'2" interior height (semi-low pro) made by Triple B. Partially because I may want to haul something bigger or something else, and partially because of resale. The 20s seem to bring more money on the used market. P.S. you should take a serious look at Pace.

Re: Trailer Question
Haulmark has a good reputation. A few issues here though. The longer the trailer you buy, the more flexibility you have in 'centering' the load (fore/aft) to achieve optimum tongue weight. The 18' is about as small as you can go....
Next, you'll find the load 'grows' and having room up front to stow things is a real handy feature!
As far as making it easy on your 1/2 ton truck, a BUNCH depends on what the terrain you've got to navigate is. Out here in Colorado (at altitude with 7% grades to negotiate over the Continental Divide), a 1/2 ton tow vehicle is a JOKE! If you like manually downshifting the tranny and crawling along at 30 MPH max with your 1/2 ton running full out, OK. But, we prefer long wheel base 3/4 ton or 1-ton tow vehicles like pickup/Suburban and more than a few have Paxton blowers on 'em....
On the trailer, consider entrance/egress. If you have a Corvette with low ground clearance (like a side piper), that beaver tail frame option makes sense...
Last, the longer the wheel base on your tow vehicle, the better off you are. Something short like a Blazer or other SUV urban warriors can be expected to 'wip' on the freeway when you're passed by a good sized semi....- Top

Re: Trailer Question
Thanks Jack, I know that a 3/4 or above would bee a better choice, but all my money is already tied up in my cars! When it comes time for a new truck, I will probably buy a diesel 1 ton. I was hoping to get a slope front or low profile trailer, but messed around too long trying to find a trailer to rent for Luaughlin. I found that there is No rental market for car haulers! None of the dealers stock slope front or low profile trailers becuase they say they can't hardly give them away, and the dilevery time for a build to order is over 7 weeks. I will just have to keep looking, an open trailer is starting to look more attractive.- Top

Re: Trailer Question
John, I vascillated on trailers for 3 years and finally decided on the all aluminum Trailex. They are only large enough to haul a small car like a Corvette, Camaro etc. Any C1 thru C5 will fit. They are 6"-11" high so they will fit in a home garage and weigh 1600 lbs. empty. I liked it because I own a V8 Jeep Cherokee and that will tow it easily according to Trailex. That saves me investing in a larger tow vehicle. Mine is built and I'm getting ready to pick it up soon so I have no firsthand experience, but they have been making these for some time and I'm sure they have perfected the trailer and the towing vechicle arrangement. They are a bit pricey but I'm betting on a very good resale when I choose to sell it. They have a web page trailex.com. Take a look and call Carl if you need more information. Yhey are great to do business with. Good Luck- Top

Dearth of rental trailers
I, like you, have noted the absolute non-existance of enclosed trailers for rent anywhere in the country. I can't justify the expense of purchasing an enclosed trailer solely for use once or twice a year to distant meets. The last time I needed one I called every rental and automotive/truck business in town with no luck. I finally got to the postion of calling friends of friends of friends to try to rent a private trailer with no luck.
There sure seems to be an opportunity here for the industry (U-Haul, etc.) to develop a trailer that can be multiuse: easily accommodate a car as well as the usual furniture and boxes of traditional rental moving trailers.

Re: Trailer Question
John:
I also had a Trailex trailer but mine was all aluminum open style that I pulled through the mountains of Georgia with a V6 Toyota 4 Runner........NO PROBLEM!!!! I also purchased the wind screen from them which made the trailer very servicable. When it came time to sell the trailer it went to it's new owner for the exact purchase price. Call them for a catalog, great people to work with
but the draw back is the factory delivery (Ohio) which might not work for you.
Good luck, Bill- Top

No way!
Renting an enclosed hauler... The lion's share of the job is 'fitting' the interior with hold downs tailored to the target car. Open trailers are a breeze and they ARE available for hire from U-Haul. But, how do you sleep at night along the way knowing 'baby' is sitting in the open, on display, to any/all?
You simply don't see too many enclosed haulers for re-sale because they become real popular as 'temporary/portable' garages. Your best shot is just at the beginning/end of race season as the vintage boys trade up and dump their old haulers.
The BW to 'rent' a hauler is to join NCRS + your local chapter. Get active and known among other local members and Pandora's Box just might open for you from the brotherhood....- Top

Re: Trailer Question
John, I ordered a 20' Haulmark last year lowered to 6'1" inside and sloped. I pulled it with a Tahoe & Suburban. I decided to quit dragging my cars around & sold it to a friend of mine in a package deal. He already has a 24' Pace & wants to sell the Haulmark. It is red with aluminum wheels, diamond plate trim and in excellent condition. If interested you can email, Thanks!- Top

Re: Trailer Question
John, Joe Freitas , the old racer from the 60's, has a 24 foot Hallmark that he wants to sell for $4500. It is in Fontana, California. (down south by the Interstate 10 and 15 freeways).
We have used it to haul his 57 Corvette race car up to Monterey and other tracks and it has served us well. We have also hauled his 57 two door 210 wagon as well with good results. Joe is buying a new alumminum trailer built to his "Race car" needs as we haul lots of spares when we travel.
Let me know if this will work. Also, National Dragster and Auto Week have enclosed trailers in them regularily.
