Gasket between steering knuckle and dust shield

What is the purpose of the gasket between the dust shield and the steering knuckle (spindle) on a 65 (and other mid year cars I assume). Is it a second seal for wheel bearing grease that gets by the seal?
    Thanks,

It keeps dust and water splash away from the wheel bearing seal. I haven' had the splash shields on my Cosworth Vega for twenty years - I removed them for better brake cooling during track events. I don't drive the car in the rain or on dirt roads, so I have had no problems with the wheel bearings or seals resulting from not having the dust shields and their gaskets in place.
