Re: Fleur-de-lis
I always wondered what the Fleur-de-lis signafied as well as the three dashes below it on the right side of the red flag.Does anyone know the correct answer?
The left side is half of the "Bowtie". I have seen an early designed badge that used an American flag on one side.- Top

Re: CORVETTE INSIGNIA
Although I can't recall, the source, I heard the original insignia that was planned included an American flag but it was changed at the last minute because the flag cannot be used for commerial purposes. If true, there was probably a scramble to redesign on very short notice.- Top

Re: CORVETTE INSIGNIA
There are still 'corvettes' in some navies of the world, many of which also have a rank: 'capitaine de corvette', which is roughly equivalent to a USN lieutenant-commander. I'm not a naval historian, but I think you might find that the first use of the designation 'corvette' was by the French navy. It just may be that the fleur-de-lys was applied to the emblem to relate the chosen name to that background.

Re: CORVETTE INSIGNIA *TL*
I believe the fleur-de-lis has more to do with the Chevrolet brothers than Corvette. The French heritage relates to them.
I once saw a whole story on the Corvette logo, but I can not now remember where. I read it someplace, an old Corvette News perhaps? I believe there is a display at the National Corvette Museum that has something about it as well. I know that they have the emblem from the Motorama car with the American flag on display. There may be material in that display that deals with the rest of the heraldry.

Re: CORVETTE INSIGNIA
The original design (the one in the NCM which was researched by John Amgwert) did have an American flag as one of the crossed flags, however it was decided by GM in NY, at the last minute, that an American flag was not appropriate. The designer that had brought the emblem to NY,to be put on the show car, redesigned it in his hotel and used the wall paper in that room as a pattern guide for the fleur de lis!!!!!!!!!!!
