Re: 68 big block?
Ken, That is like asking, How do you know if a guy is a citizen!
You need to give us a lot of info on the car and take a lot of stuff off the car. Best to take a member that knows 68s to see the car. You might start with the stamp pad on the engine,ie; the suffix, then to the suspension, front and rear etc. I could go on and on...............- Top

Re: 68 big block?
I know the engine is a re-stamp, I just began to wonder if the car even came with a big block originally?- Top

Re: 68 big block?
Rear stabilizer bar? 7 leaf spring? heavy duty shocks? larger diameter front stabil, bar? Half shafts w/ caps instead of U-joints? Higher RPM tach? Longer fuel line at fuel pump? Just because the motor's been restamped doesn't always mean it's not the original motor!- Top

Yes, the 7/8" front stabilizer bar, rear stabilizer bar, and cap-type yoke axles are key things to look for. Also, check for the presence of a fuel return line. For 1968, all small blocks used it and it's difficult to remove. Unfortunately, L-36 big blocks used it too, so, by itself, it's not proof-positive. The important thing is to carefully look for a COMBINATION of these features. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top

Yes, the build sheet or tank sticker, if available, is the "primary" piece of documentation. All of the other things mentioned here represent "secondary" means of determining the engine originally installed in the car. Generally, when someone asks for visual cues to determine what engine might have originally been installed, I assume that the "primary" means of determining it has not panned out for one reason or another. It might not always be the case, though. It's certainly easy enough to check to, at least, see if the tank sticker is present. In Appreciation of John Hinckley- Top
