    69 Rally wheels

Several questions regarding 69 wheel restoration
    1. are the wheel balance weights supposed to be "micro" as in 70-72?
2.what color paint dots correspond with the different size weights?
    3. need a source for correct valve stems and caps
4.are the trim rings and center caps that are commonly available at most suppliers totally correct?
    Thanks to all in advance.

    Re: 69 Rally wheels

Don't really understand the first two questions....

    (3) Correct valve stems. You want components from Dill Mfgr which is the 'house brand' at Discount Tire. Blow off the high priced catalog houses and drop by your local Discount store. Plus, 'correct' here will be conditioned on whether or not you had the optional P02 wheel covers (no caps on valve stems--just Schraeder extenders), but since the next question asks about Rally wheel things, I'll assume you don't have optional wheel covers.

    (4) Caps and rims. On center caps, there are two schools out there today. EXPENSIVE and correct with the 'Chevrolet Motor Division' emboss, chrome plated SS construction. CHEAP and incorrect with no 'Chevy' emboss (saves a license fee) and chrome-over plastic construction.

On trim rings, the answer is a little 'yes' and mostly 'no'.... Original trim rings were chrome over SS with discrete mounting clips to grab the outer lip of the wheel rim. These were a pain, because after a few rolls of the dice (replacement tires and re-balance) one or more of your exterior wheel weights wanted to be SMACK DAB where a trim ring clip wanted to go!

Next, there are early and late versions of the trim rings that deal with the 'clocking' of where the fixed clips are positioned relative to the valve stem hole. So, one can advertize "GM Original/NOS" and so on but you wind up with what's factory correct/original for a '77 and later.... Buy and read an NCRS Judging Guide for specifics.

Last, you'll find Taiwaneese trim rings in the catalogs at bargain prices. These vary in construction, but MOST of them lack the discrete/fixed mounting clips. Instead, they provide an all-grip circumference of 'fingers' to press against the inside of the wheel's outer lip. There's no wheel weight interference with these guys, but they are detectably different from factory stock/original. Some will be simply polished SS while others will be chromed.

      Re: 69 Rally wheels *TL*

      Tom,

      1) I would expect the brand "Micro" on 1969 wheel weights, but am not 100% sure. Absent someone coming up here to conclusively state that they did not use Micro in 1969, you will be safe with them - if you can get them. BTW: If you do find a source, please share it with us.

      2) I have no idea what color wax was used on the wheels to indicate the various weights, but it would make an interesting survey for someone to do. I am willing to survey my stash of original wheels and tires if someone will pick up the gauntlet. Be aware the price of the research would be a story for The Restorer.

Good concise answers, Jack, for 3 & 4. Although I am not a 100% believer in Dill they are as good a valve stem cap as any. There are minor variations in the Dill caps over the years, but these differences may not be worth dealing with. Also, Dill is used OEM on some Daimler-Chrysler vehicles. Might be on some others as well.

        Re: 69 Rally wheels

I was inflating the tires in my sons 2001 Toyota Tacoma truck and noticed the Dill and Shrader dimpled valve caps. A 60's style valve cap on a new car!!!!!

Thanks alot guys for your responses. Now I know why the set of NOS trim rings in original boxes that I bought on Ebay did not have a clip located next to the valve stem hole. Must be 77 0r later NOS.

Tom, I believe any trim rings in a box will have improper clip location. The only trim rings to have the proper "clock" are the assambly line rings or service replacement trim rings where some "deviuos" restorer pinches the outer ring and rotates the clip retainer to make the clips align properly. I have seen lots of the latter type so BEWARE. This is also a good example of incorect NOS parts.
