The gears are available to change your current rear end to 4:11. I don't know if an earlier unit that came with 4:11 gears that might be available from a Corvette parts business or an indvidual would bolt right in your 81 with. I know the last few years of the C3 had some changes.

      Diane and Jim------

4.11:1 ring and pinion gears were never available from GM for the 80-82 Corvette Dana 44 differential assembly. However, gears with ratios very close to 4.11 (and even higher numerically) are available in the aftermarket from source like Tom's Differentials of Paramount, CA (www.tomsdifferentials.com).

        Joe,

I had heard that the Corvettes used the Dana 44 rear end. I have a 72, does it use that same assembly or a different one?

        Thank you,
        Walt

No, 1963 through 1979 Corvettes do not use a Dana-manufactured differential assembly. For these years, the unit is one of GM manufacture with an Eaton-manufactured positration unit (65+).

As far as C2 and C3, the Dana 44 differential assemblies were used only for 1980-82. Beginning with the C4 in 1984, Dana 36 were used for automatic-equipped Corvettes and Dana 44 for manual trans cars. However, the C4 Dana 44 unit is not the same as the 80-82 C3 unit.

            Thank you Joe!

I didn't realize that there could be so many variables for these cars given the chassis remained pretty much the same from 63 through 82. My question was more out of curiosity than anything. I plan on keeping the 3.08:1 gearset I have but someone was telling me the car had a Dana 44 rear end and could easily be converted to a different gearset if I was interested.

Well, the someone was incorrect about a 71 having a Dana 44. However, they were correct about the ability to change the rear gear ratio rather easily. Although all of the 63-79 ring and pinion gear sets are GM-discontinued, they are available in the aftermarket for the 63-79 carriers. Also, used gearsets or complete carrier assemblies with all ratios are available. Gear sets have been and/or are manufactured in ratios from 2.73:1 up through about 5.12:1 for the 63-79 Corvette carrier.

Thanks again Joe! You are a wealth of information I'll keep the 3.08 for now atleast. This is a driver (too many things to change to make it original again...) I don't want or need to be putting more money into it at this time.

Besides, it's seems to me to be quick enough taking off and the 3.08 on the highway makes it nice. I can run 75 mph and am running just under 3000 rpm.
