The correct harmonic balancer on my 56 is seating against the spacer on the crankshaft fully. I have confirmed that it is in the right spot by aligning the pulley groove with the water pump pulley. The problem I have is that the balancer wobbles on the crank just a bit and, in fact, I can wiggle it enough to pull it off by hand - not good I suspect. I have yet to mic the crank snout and inside of the balancer but suspect that the balancer is oversized. Is there a repair for the balancer? Can I install it with some thin brass shimstock between the inside of the balancer and the crank snout? Is the balancer a throw away? Any suggestions would be really appreciated.

Jim Frakes may have some good tips on this, but I wouldn't use the balancer as you have described, even with shims - when a balancer comes off, it makes a really ugly mess. A solution MIGHT be to use Loctite "Bearing Mount" on it, but I have no experience with it in this application.- Top

Re: 56 harmonic balancer
Steve,
Your harmonic balancer can be serviced. There are at least two repair shops both located in California (I believe). They both advertise in Hemmings - Damper Dudes and Damper Doctor if memory serves me right.
They can rebuild your balancer by removing the rivets, bead blasting, reassembling with new correct rivets and rubber insulator, and painting. They can also bore and install a bushing in the center hole should it be worn as is yours.
I had this done to one of mine and was very satified with the results.
Let me know if you need the phone numbers for these providers and I will email them to you when I get home.
Good luck.

Re: 56 harmonic balancer
Even though the balancer on my '60 fit tight, it and the crankshaft are still 40 year old pieces - when I put the motor together, I had the crankshaft tapped for the 63 up HP balancer bolt and washers. My confidence level increased by leaps and bounds- Top
