DIY Paper Restoration Techniques (tank sticker...)

A few years ago I distinctly remember reading an article probably in one of the 2 monthly rags (Vette, Fever) or possibly in the Restorer itself on how to somewhat clean up and improve an original tank sticker. It was a pretty darn good article and mentioned some safe chemicals, techniques etc. But I've gone through my index-less stack of Vette mags twice and darned if I can find the article. Anybody recall this and point me to the issue that has it?

Or for that matter does anybody just have some suggestions, tips etc?

    thanks,
    -T

Hello, there is a quite complete article in Corvette Fever, March 95, page 52. Final suggestion of the article: to contact an expert in paper preservation.

I remember reading a similar article in one of the magazines that I subrscribed to. As I remember it, the cost of the preservation and restoration was very high, perhaps beyond the scope of what we are looking for. I think it was done by a professional in the paper/book preservation field and involved rinsing of the paper in certain chemicals followed by other treatments. I read the article with interest but never considered the process as being practical for a tank sticker on an average Corvette. Now, if you had found a previously unkonw L-88 or ZL-1 with a paper trail.....

The cheapest method is with the camera. Shoot a transparency/ slide of the sticker, have it scanned by a pro photo lab, and cleaned-up.A final print of the image your best bet. Have the original sealed and laminated.

My tank sheet was in a zillion pieces and not very ledgible. Had it reconstructed, but couldn't read it, just to have it and that was a couple of years ago. After reading Bob's post today I took it to a photo shop and ask them to try and bring up the lettering. They put it in a scanner and when the image came up on the computer they worked on the sharpness and contract till it was much better and printed it. I can now read 80% taking my time and the cost was $12. Good Luck, Bill
